Behind the Claims: Meet Jim Girard, VP of Engineering

March 19, 2026

Building claims technology with empathy, speed, and the right kind of caution

When people hear "VP of Engineering," they often think of architecture diagrams, code reviews, and infrastructure decisions.

What they don't always see is how much of great engineering is actually about people: understanding what claims teams carry, translating complexity into clarity, and making sure technology reduces burden instead of adding to it.

That's the lens Jim Girard brings to Benekiva.

Jim's career has lived at the intersection of insurance reality and technical innovation, long enough to remember walking into rooms filled with mainframes and feeling the weight of what "the system" physically looked like.

"You're in awe when you can physically see it," Jim said. "Now we see the numbers in dashboards, but we forget what all of that actually is."

From a Small TPA to an Industry-Wide View

Jim's first job out of college was with a small local TPA that was starting to go more technical, helping customers integrate with mainframe systems. He watched the organization grow rapidly, and more importantly, he learned how insurance technology evolves: slowly, carefully, and always under the shadow of risk.

Over time, Jim worked across lines—from P&C to life—and discovered a pattern that kept pulling him back.

"The insurance industry had a hold on me," he said. "It's not glamorous from a technology standpoint, but that's exactly why it matters when you have people who understand both insurance and technology."

That dual understanding—industry nuance plus technical execution—is rare. And Jim believes it's one of the most important ingredients in building systems that actually work.

Progress, Without Unnecessary Risk

Insurance can't "move fast and break things." The stakes are too high. But moving too slowly has consequences too, especially in claims, where delays mean stress, confusion, and often real financial hardship.

Jim's approach is about finding the right balance:

  • Introduce innovation when it's ready
  • Reduce risk without freezing progress
  • Modernize in a way that respects how insurers actually operate
"It's knowing when to introduce the next thing," Jim explained, "without introducing too much risk."

The Future of Claims Is Both Faster and More Human

As technology has evolved, Jim's seen insurance move from weeks-long processes to near-instant outcomes in certain areas—and he's excited about what's next.

But he's also clear-eyed about what shouldn't be lost along the way: human judgment, compassion, and trust.

"AI's awesome right now," Jim said, "but it's still in its infancy. You still need the human touch, someone to double check."

For Jim, the real opportunity is using technology to remove the burden from the people who are already carrying too much, both claimants and the teams serving them. If the examiner's tools are clunky, fragmented, and exhausting, the claimant will feel it because the person on the other end of the phone is working through that friction in real time.

"If you give the claims examiner a seamless experience," Jim said, "they're going to communicate better to the person who just lost someone. It's full cycle."

That's why engineering at Benekiva isn't just about shipping features. It's about creating clarity, reducing clicks, and keeping workflows intuitive, so claims professionals can focus on what matters.

Why He's Here

At the end of the day, Jim keeps coming back to the same idea: claims technology should be built to serve people in hard moments without creating extra complexity for the teams delivering that service.

Speed matters. Savings matter. But only if it adds up to something better for the humans involved.

Because in claims, the real goal isn't "digital." It's relief.
